A civil construction foreman with decades of experience working alongside major companies and governments has said he will bring his unique skill set to the Bundaberg Regional Council if elected in March.
Geoff Goodwin is running for Division 10 of the council, a decision spurred by what he claimed was a disconnect between the council and the community.
“My goal is to bring a more community-oriented approach,” he said.
Mr Goodwin said he wanted to bring an open-door policy for the division.
While he acknowledged councillors often had several demands on their time, he wanted to be a transparent councillor.
“There’s always another side to the story,” he said.
“The unfortunate part of that is we don’t seem to have much access as residents to that side of the story.”
In his years of experience for the public and private sectors, Mr Goodwin said he had developed a keen eye for infrastructure projects and this was something which had caused him to question the biggest projects in the region.
“I’m a grassroots guy, I look at the bottom level of what is presented to us as residents,” he said.
“I look around and I see parks aren’t mowed and roads have potholes in them, and then we see a multimillion-dollar pool.”
“When I see all that it makes me wonder what’s going on.”
If elected, Mr Goodwin said he would bring the council “back to basics” and focus on key services such as roads, parks and waste before looking to “legacy” projects.
Speaking on what triggered his decision to nominate for the role, following years of interest in politics Mr Goodwin said it came down to one simple fact.
“I thought ‘I can sit here and whinge about it or have a go at changing the status quo’,” he said.
