Incumbent mayor Jack Dempsey has announced his plans to contest his position in the Bundaberg Regional Council and has issued a warning to other councillors about making promises they cannot keep.

As part of his campaign, Mr Dempsey said he would focus on lessening the impact of the cost-of-living crisis and keep rates as low as possible.

“I’m pleased that your council was able to adopt a budget this year that had a zero general rate rise and a doubling of the pensioner discount to help ease cost-of-living pressure,” he said.

“My wish is to limit future rate increases to CPI, which is challenging given the cost shifting that occurs from the state government and stringent requirements to comply with waste management regulations.”

However, he cautioned those promising to lower rates if elected, and said jobs would be at risk if successful.

“I caution voters to be wary of claims that rates could be reduced,” he said.

“Unfortunately, this is only possible if services and jobs are cut.

“I’m proud of our council workforce and want them all to know their efforts are appreciated and their jobs are secure under current policies.”

Speaking on his tenure as mayor, Mr Dempsey reflected on the “positivity and progress” he has been able to achieve over the past four years.

“Eight years ago, our economy was experiencing negative economic growth,” he said.

“Now, the Bundaberg region is experiencing its strongest economy in 16 years.”

Mr Dempsey spoke on a number of projects the council was able to advocate for including the Bundaberg East flood levee, the council’s Bundaberg jobs commitment and the Anzac Park redevelopment.

“A council that I lead will focus on making our region a better place to live, work and play through continuing improvements to roads and pathways, parks and gardens and providing community services to maintain our liveability and lifestyle,” he said.

“We’ve made significant progress towards completing a new regional aquatic centre, which will become a community hub and provide much-needed support for people with disabilities and increase overall health and wellbeing.”
