It’s an event that brings tourists from across the globe and now the Cane2Coral is back on track for 2023.

The popular event went on hiatus in the midst of the pandemic, but is back for 2023 with new organisers and a range of sponsors.

The Apex Club of Bundaberg has come on board to run the Cane2Coral, which hosted 1800 competitors in its last event in 2019.

A cash injection from the state government will see a $40,000 boost, as well as funding from other sponsors.

Cane2Coral co-ordinator Terry Harlick said he was excited to bring the event back with the help of sponsors.

“Without them, the event simply wouldn't happen,” he said.

Mr Harlick said the July 23 event would include a new and inclusive 2km event for people of all abilities whether they’ve suffered injuries or need to compete in a wheelchair.

The event is also a major fundraiser in itself, and this year proceeds will go to Lifeflight, Ronald McDonald House and the Children’s Cancer Institute.

MP Tom Smith said the plans all came together when Mr Harlick visited his office last year to discuss bringing the event back.

“This is obviously an iconic event in Bundaberg...,” he said, adding that the funding was part of the state government’s Tourism Events Queensland program.

“This is more than just a fun run, it’s a tourist destination hot spot,” Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith said the event would have “a real win-win bonus” effect on the city, as it falls just one week before a major footy match between the Canterbury Bulldogs and Redcliffe.

“That means that we will attract people from not just across the region and across the state, but also interstate and Sydneysiders coming up so they can take part in the fun run stay around for the week and then enjoy the game at the end of the week as well,” he said.

Mr Smith said the events would bring the region a financial boost in the wake of the pandemic.
