More than 150 Bonza passengers had their own taste of fame when they were greeted by a gathering of cameras and the media on Wednesday afternoon after stepping off the first official Melbourne to Bundaberg flight.

A blustery tarmac had little impact on Sheila, the third plane added to Bonza’s growing fleet who landed at the Bundaberg Airport shortly after 12pm Wednesday.

Bonza chief executive Tim Jordan was one of many on the flight who arrived in Bundaberg.

He said the flights between Melbourne and Bundaberg were mutually desired with warmer winter weather calling visitors from down south.

“We are seeing strong demand for this route in both directions as Victorians seek out winter warmth and to experience the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef,” he said.

“It’s also a chance for Melburnian foodies to tour Bundy’s iconic distillery, food and drink producers and indulge in fresh local seafood.”

Mayor Jack Dempsey was on the tarmac to welcome arrivals.

“It’s a great result for locals to have increased travel options to enjoy top-flight sports and cultural experiences and visit loved ones, while our tourism industry will have access to a massive new market,” he said.

“Bundaberg offers the quintessential Aussie experience from iconic beverages to bush heritage, turtles, pristine beaches and the southern Great Barrier Reef.”

More than 150 of the flight’s 180 seats were filled.

Mr Jordan said the airline offered modern services and the newest fleet of aircraft in the country.

The airline has done away with the time old service cart, with passengers encouraged to make use of the Bonza app to order food and drinks from the All-Australian menu as desired.

The twice weekly round trips will go between Bundaberg and Melbourne on Wednesdays and Sundays, with fares starting at $89.
