Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park slated for all important upgrade

A idyllic nature reserve in the heart of Bundaberg is finally getting a key upgrade after years of neglect.

Nature enthusiasts have long enjoyed the nature reserve in the heart of Bundaberg known for its rich biodiversity and tranquil wetlands.

Now they are getting a chance to enjoy it anew.

Bundaberg Regional Council have started work fixing a deteriorated pedestrian bridge in Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park, the first major work to the structure in years.

Plans to enhance the safety and usability for visitors were expected to start immediately with hopes upgrades will be completed by July 2025.

The park will remain open during the construction with alternative walking paths and signage installed to guide visitors safely around the work zone.

Work will take place on weekdays during daytime hours, with council acknowledging the inconvenience that may result from the temporary disruption.

A council statement said Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park was once a low-lying floodplain, but was converted into the urban nature reserve known today, in the 1970s.

“Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park, located near the Bundaberg CBD,”

“[It] has a long-standing reputation as a natural haven.

Valued by the community as a “space for walking, birdwatching and environmental education,” the statement read.
