Brisbane Weather: Double-digit rainfall expected from Wednesday

The southeast will experience cooler temperatures throughout the week, with heavy rainfall expected leading into the weekend.

Watch: Wild weather rips through east coast

Cooler temperatures and cloud cover will hover over the southeast this week, with rainfall up to 45mm forecast in parts from Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting showers in the Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast areas to begin on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to fall several degrees short of the February average.

Several factors will impact the intensity of the rainfall, which will become clearer in the coming days.

“There is a little bit of uncertainty later in the week, dependent on other features such as onshore flow which will influence the intensity of the rainfall,” meteorologist Kimba Wong said.

“Regardless of the offshore factors, southeast Queensland can reasonably expect double digit rainfall, likely arriving on Wednesday and continuing throughout the week, potentially into the weekend.

“Again, there is an element of uncertainty regarding rainfall, but the forecast for the week will be characterised by cooler air, high cloud cover and lower temperatures, 2-3 degrees below February averages.”

At Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, up to 45mm is forecast to fall on Wednesday, with up to 25mm on Thursday through to Saturday.

Brisbane is forecast to receive 20mm on Wednesday, with up to 15mm per day into the weekend.

It comes as the state’s southern interior copped a welcome drenching over the weekend, with the heavy deluge making locals ‘dance in the rain’.

In the 24 hours leading to Sunday at 9am, the heaviest rainfall total was recorded in Roma with 96mm.

Locals took to social media writing that it was the best rainfall they’ve had in a long time.

One woman, who lives north west of Wallumbilla, said she recorded “a beautiful” 75mm of rainfall.

“Doing the happy dance,” she said.

“Maybe the gaps are starting to fill in.”

Elsewhere St George recorded 55mm of rainfall while Applethorpe, near Stanthorpe, recorded 22mm.
