Known as the ugliest building in the city, towers from the Brisbane Transit Centre have all but disappeared as work on a $5.4 billion project continues. WATCH THE TRANSFORMATION

“Brisbane’s ugliest building” has all but disappeared from the City skyline as work continues toward transforming a neglected part of the CBD.

Opened in 1986 as a hub of long-distance and commuter transport in Brisbane, the Brisbane Transit Centre is now 80 per cent demolished.

Pictures show that where the three 20-storey towers once stood over Roma St and the surrounding CBD, there is now just sky.

Video taken by the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority shows the East, West Tower and Hotel Jen being demolished floor-by-floor between April and August this year.

There has been some disruption to life below, with commuters now being herded through narrow passages as they make their way between Roma Street’s train platforms and the nearby law courts and police precinct.

Buses were rerouted from the Roma Street Busway station onto nearby streets while workers demolished platforms to make way for the new underground train and Brisbane Metro platforms.

“At two hectares in total, the demolition site is one of the largest inner city demolition sites Brisbane has ever seen,” Cross River Rail Minister Kate Jones said.

“Demolition is now about 80 per cent complete, and is expected to be complete within 2020,” Ms Jones said.

Cross River Rail is due to be completed in 2024.

Griffith University recently revealed stunning new plans for its new northern campus, earmarked to be built where the Transit Centre once stood and on top of the new Roma Street station.
