A suite of new projects, including BMX parks, bikeways and wetlands walks, are set to recharge Brisbane’s economy and create more than 300 jobs with council pouring millions into Brisbane’s suburbs in the wake of COVID-19.

Key projects include fast-tracking work on the Archerfield wetlands precinct, a new playground at Windsor Sports and community park and a $3.7 million off-road cycling track at Minnippi Parklands in Cannon Hill, which council expects will be completed by the end of 2021.

It comes courtesy of a Federal Government grant through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

“Through this grant round we have been able to commit to a really diverse range of 41 projects across all corners of the city, from big ticket items like a new $3.7 million bikeway in Minnippi Parklands to smaller works to improve the quality of community halls,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

Council has flagged a new BMX and scooter track at Coorparoo Common as well as a replacement skate park at Ed Davenport Rotary Park, as part of the program.

Another $5.7 million will upgrade one of Brisbane’s biggest sports parks at White Hill – while roadworks projects are also slated for Aspley, Fitzgibbon and Northgate – “to assist residents get home quicker and safer,” Mr Schrinner said.

In total the projects are expected to create 320 jobs across the River City, which Mr Schrinner said was “more important that ever” in the wake of coronavirus.

“These local projects put money into the pockets of local suppliers and residents … (and) provide a much-needed economic boost to our city, which is so important as we band together to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Schrinner said.

Work on all projects is expected to begin this year.
