Eight years ago Justin Geange attempted to take his own life, he now has dedicated his second chance to his two daughters and helping men battle mental health problems.
Mr Geange is a plumber, Broncos mascot and former Australia’s Got Talent contestant and has become an ambassador for MATES in construction.
He said he now knows the importance of speaking out.
Mr Geange and his family are taking part in The Sunday Mail Transurban Bridge to Brisbane to raise money and awareness for MATES.
“I’ve walked those dark depths, I do have a mental illness and have experiences with suicide but I really found help from the mates stepping up and checking in with me,” Mr Geange said.
“If we can do that day in, day out we can help so many people in the industry who struggle
and that’s why I am a bit loud and proud about it.”
The importance of normalising conversations about mental health in the industry is at the forefront of their work.
“We’re all about prevention, we want to train the whole industry up on how to look up for their mates, our simple thing is mates helping mates,” he said.
The Sunday Mail Transurban Bridge to Brisbane takes place on Sunday, August 29.
