Emergency alert for Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast has not escaped the flood and storm threat, with a ‘watch and act’ message issued just after 7am on Monday.

Emergency alert for Brisbane

Residents in one part of Brisbane, Enoggera Dam, were at 5.30am on Monday told to prepare to move to higher ground, with emergency alerts issued, major flood warnings in place and a dangerous storm warning current.

However there are no safety issues at Enoggera Dam operator Seqwater confirmed, after a hoax failure alert began circulating online.

Earlier, alerts were issued for people in the Kenmore area, with fears the Gubberley Creek Detention Basin could fail. Alerts were also issued for areas around Oxley Creek in the city’s southwest and parts of Ipswich.

Emergency alert for Laidley

Lockyer Valley Regional Council issued an emergency warning to ask residents to take shelter due to flooding from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

In a warning issued about 7.30am on Monday morning, locals were urged to find somewhere safe as southeast Queensland continued to endure the aftermath of the heavy rain and wind gusts.

Buses, Citycats shut down

Buses and CityCats have been suspended again in Brisbane on Monday morning due to flooding and debris, with car the only option for travel into the city.

However Queensland Rail was continuing to run limited services at a Sunday timetable on Monday, with several lines impacted by storm and cyclone damage.

Severe storm warnings active

A warning for ‘very dangerous’ thunderstorms was issued for parts of Ipswich, Gympie, Somerset, Scenic Rim, South Burnett, Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley, Cherbourg and Southern Downs Council Areas.

Evacuation centres open

Brisbane City Council on Monday opened multiple evacuation centres for residents needing to leave due to flooding.

The Chandler Arena, Sleeman Sports Complex at 757 Tilley Road, Chandler, and the Kedron Wavell Services Club at Chermside are now open.

Riverlife Community Centre at 47 Jennifer Street, Seventeen Mile Rocks is also open.

Rivers rising

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Andrea Peace warned that there was still flooding to come, with major rivers and creeks across the southeast likely to peak later on Monday.

Logan and Albert rivers as well are expected to flood, while a moderate flood warning was issued for the Stanley River at Woodford and a minor warning for the upper Brisbane River was issued just after 8am.

The forecasted rainfall for Monday could see the Upper Brisbane River, at Gregor Creek, reach a minor flood level by Monday afternoon.

Rainfall totals

Areas around Brisbane have recorded massive rainfall totals, including 349mm since 9am on Sunday at the Green Hill Reservoir at Indooroopilly.

In the same period, 326mm fell at Mt Coot-tha, 324mm at Kenmore, 322mm at Rosalie, 310mm at Corinda, 299mm in Brisbane City, 287mm at Mt Nebo, 285mm at Camp Hill, 282mm at Mansfield, 281mm at Ithaca Creek, 276mm at Salisbury, 265mm at Mt Gravatt, 251mm at Eagle Farm and 191mm at Slacks Creek.

Emergency services

The SES had more than 3600 callouts between 4am Sunday and 4am on Monday morning, with 41 per cent of the jobs “structural” followed by tree down (22 per cent) and flooded (21 per cent).

There were 1148 in Brisbane, 643 callouts on the Gold Coast and 458 callouts in the Moreton Bay region.
