SEVERAL homes and businesses have lost power after diners at a creekside eatery witnessed powerlines snapping over a busy intersection, sending sparks flying.

At 3:30pm on Saturday, the powerlines snapped and “snaked through the air before landing” over Thrower Dr and Duringan St at Currumbin, horrifying nearby diners at Saltwater Dining on Currumbin Creek.

Diner Rae Wilson said she heard a huge bang and then turned to see a powerline flying through the air.

“Two big wires were snaking through the air and flying around dangerously before landing in two places on the road,” she said.

“As I rushed out to see if it was a crash, another bloke said one of the wires landed on a car and he saw sparks flying.

“People nearby rushed to try to direct traffic around the powerlines which were coiled up on the road.

“I called Triple 0 while one of the ladies at the restaurant phoned Energex.”

Ms Wilson said power was lost to several businesses in the area with Saltwater restaurant, usually open until 9pm, having to close early.

She said the restaurant was using hot spot on a phone so the rest of the customers could pay.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said traffic control officers were on scene, diverting traffic at the busy intersection after the lights had blown.

No injuries have been reported.

Energex reported that 2,594 customers have lost power in the area due to the incident, with outages stretching as far as neighbouring suburbs Palm Beach and Tugun.

An Energex spokesperson said a helium baloon had floated into the wires, causing a pole to partially catch fire and the lines to snap.

He said the outages are expected to last for several hours.
