Labor has been accused of abandoning the regions. Now Queenslanders, it seems, continue to abandon Labor.

Warren Mundine, former National President of the Australian Labor Party and Indigenous Forum director at the Centre for Independent Studies, argued so much in his column for The Courier-Mail.

“It should have been no surprise that Labor was smashed in regional Queensland at the state election,” he wrote following Labor’s loss of the Mackay seat at the state election for the first time.

“Queensland Labor’s embrace of progressive policies popular with the urban elite meant it had abandoned the regions.

“These communities have suffered.”

Mr Mundine, among other things, took aim at energy decisions.

“They have suffered from inflation driven by government spending and energy transition,” he wrote.

“They have suffered with job losses from baseload power stations being wound down while their communities make way for the forests of wind farms, carpets of solar panels and untold miles of high-voltage transmission lines.

“They have suffered from soaring crime fuelled by progressive ideologies, a tourism industry regularly undermined by activist lies about the health of the Great Barrier Reef, and with coal industries demonised – even as they carry the state’s economy.

“Queensland Labor talked a lot of talk about renewables and energy transition.

But its big-spending government was funded by royalties from coal mining and dividends from coal power stations.”

Readers were quick to join the pile-on, claiming Labor indeed abandoned the regions.

However some said there were wider issues; others insisted no one could be trusted.

WHAT YOU SAID

Mundine is right!

David

Warren Mundine provided a succinct and incisive comment on where Labor failed – and most importantly their attention to grab lines as socialist cuppucino elites rather than those who they should be supporting.

Denise

This is where the money is created. And I live in south East Queensland. Regional people must be looked after

jimK

yep, Mundine is spot on; the standards & values of the old school Labor are long gone. Now we have the likes of Albanese & Miles et al where long term Labor supporters cringe every time they open their mouths.

Tom

Warren Mundine is spot on with his wise analogy of the Qld election & Labor not caring for all Qld-ers.

LFC

Warren gets it, he should lead the Labor Party.

They are just so out of touch like the Greens.

Regions lose again

patricia

Regions knew they were short-changed but govt refused to listen to their calls & are now paying the price. 50c fares for southeast commuters having public transport didn’t work for places lacking any public transport but paying for others

Henry Root

mackay is built on cattle, cane, coal and tourism. the alp has attacked the mines, tried to restrict access and farming to “protect” the reef, tried to dam the Pioneer River which would have cut farming irrigation to a non sustainable level. so the alp almost killed off cane, coal and tourism and wonder why they got tossed?

Bruce

I’ve just driven from Cairns to Adelaide via Rockhampton, Miles and Goondiwindi. I’ll never complain about SA roads again. At least NSW are making an effort to rebuild their flood and truck ravaged roads. Queensland is doing nothing. Cancel the Olympics and build roads.

Labor needs change

The Joker

The Alp refuse to accept well documented opinions about Steven Miles popularity on the back of his appointment by Gary Bullock. Until they do, they’ll remain in opposition. How did Miles remain leader? One guess.

Mort

Qld Labor need to get out and Stop their ‘cat calling’ and disrespect of others. They are proving to us all they are still in the era of ‘University Student Politics’. Come on, Grow Up.

Sir Les P

Labor need to get candidates that have actually worked in the big world for at least 10 years instead of leave school go to Uni then Unions or Labor. Miles, Fentiman & Grace good examples maybe in their spare time do an accounting degree.

patrick

Labor has not learned.

They have appointed dumb and dumber to lead them to the next election.

Can’t trust anyone

Jeffrey

this new Liberal premier has already shown his true colours starting with his push for the expensive hydro electric power station. Just another greenie in blue colours.

Dutton’s Delcons

When you have an interest in shares through coal, sure he’ll say that. When are people going to wake up to the fact that the entire planet is phasing out coal, and the LNP is also on the path to renewables in Qld?

Jean-Marc

Regional Queensland is sparsely populated costing heaps to service roads, hospitals, police, and education, and even councils have difficulty in servicing. There will always be complaints.

Anne-Maree

What’s wrong with making coal companies pay properly for the coal they take from our land? It can’t be replaced and unless they’re making mega billions in profit they’re never happy. Warren changes his views to suit Warren’s agenda.
