Reece Walsh: Flashy fullback, one-hit wonder or generational talent?

The jury is out after Brisbane’s sorry 2024 NRL season, with superstar talent Walsh in the firing line according to some fans.

While there is little doubting the talent of the 22-year-old Maroons No. 1, his mixed performances matched those of his team as it fell to 12th on the ladder.

The fall of the Broncos from grand final to also-rans sparked a club-wide review.

Analysis from leading sports reporters Peter Badel and Travis Meyn singled out Walsh as one of the key areas that needs addressing for 2025.

“Those who think Latrell Mitchell has too much power at Souths should stop into Broncos headquarters and look at the treatment afforded to Reece Walsh,” they wrote.

“No player is ever bigger than a club and Brisbane bosses are giving too much rope to Walsh, who largely walks to the beat of his own drum at the Broncos and is described by insiders as “moody” and “highly strung”.

“At Red Hill, ‘Reece Lightning’ calls the shots – not Broncos hierarchy.

“Brisbane staff are terrified of offending him.”

That assessment sparked strong debate among readers, with some insisting Walsh should be given slack given his immense talent.

Others, though, took aim at the club for not pulling him into line.

WHAT YOU SAID

Not Walsh’s fault

shirley

He was playing for the New Zealand and playing well when he got his way to come to the Broncos that’s when all his problems started.

Dan

The buck stops with Kevie. Stat’s don’t lie. Basics and discipline have let them down. worst record in the league for errors and dropped catches.

Peter

Looks like Walsh is being made the scapegoat for bad coaching, which includes managing players.

Dan

Why is Walsh ‘moody’? He was the main reason they made the gf last year no his season has been interrupted by illegal attacking his head.

Tex

Tex The Broncos training days should be spectator free even it means busing them to different places then make them train as football players not so be stars

Jose. R

He’s a global superstar, do more to keep him and get the most out of him.

Reece needs to respond

Victoria

Walsh might be a flashy attacker, soft on the eyes and a crowd puller, but his positional play and defence is far below par for a first grader. And his attitude….Make his massive contract conditional on overall performance for another year, and if no change, cut him loose.

No name

Say what you like about Latrell, Walsh is no different, causes issues

Pervis

Broncos are the most commercially successful NRL club, does anyone think they would let Walsh go or force him to change?

The Phantom

Reece Walsh has had one good season in his career.

He’s had off field issues, opposition teams have worked him out this year.

He needs to learn a little perspective.

Paul

I love Walsh’s talent, but he is not a proven $1M player yet.

Time for change

Peter

Walsh needs to go and live with Adam Reynolds or even Corey Oates and watch how they handle themselves during a season, 24 hrs a day

Adam

It’s a shambles.

Full of dead wood or no talent.

craig

walsh is the most overrated footballer in the nrl-when the going gets tough he gets out quicksmart

Offside

I’d let Walsh go and get Pappy.
