Queensland election debate: Readers give their verdict

Most readers believe David Crisafulli was the decisive winner of the first election debate with Premier Steven Miles but some say he still needs to give more details about his plans for the state. JOIN THE CONVERSATION

Undecided voters react to leader's debate

David Crisafulli continues to play the smart target, refusing to give any great detail about his plans for Queensland.

But most of our readers believed he was the decisive winner of last night’s debate with Premier Steven Miles.

Of almost 4000 reader votes, 84 per cent believed the LNP leader was the most impressive in the debate, while 16% voted for Miles.

According to members of The Courier-Mail’s Voter Verdict, they were largely unimpressed with both men.

But it was Mr Crisafulli who fell short with the voters who described him as “condescending” and “arrogant”.

WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THE DEBATE

Darren

Anyone who thought Miles won that debate wasn’t watching the same debate. David showed us what a Premier should look and sound like. He outlined his vision of hope and accountability. Miles mumbled and sniped like a private school boy giggling through a school dance. Pathetic.

It’s just that when it’s time to change, it’s time to change. I feel confident that things will improve with an LNP Government. Sure all the new ministry will need to find their feet, but I will be voting for hope.

Dave

Watch the metamorphosis if Crisafulli becomes Premier. Just as in Animal Farm when the pigs turned into humans, Crisafulli will change into Campbell Newman before our very eyes.

Boswoz

Is that all the left have to fall back on, Campbell Newman?

Let’s not forget the 9 years of the Palaszczuk disaster.

Voting for hope will not result in good Government. Crisafulli needs plans and details to tell us what he intends to do. Otherwise you’re just writing him a blank pass to do whatever the hell he wants.l and you won’t be able to do a thing about it. The performance of the last LNP Government should tell you all you need to know. Record majority Government to Opposition in less than 3 years with Newman being the first sitting Premier to lose their seat.

Neil

Confident and forthright does not make you arrogant and condescending, the State needs a leader, someone who can hold their own on the National and Global stage. Miles is far from that person, he can’t deliver a sentence without giggling or pulling weird faces. I will take my chances with the LNP, because we cannot afford another 4 years of Labor and Union rule that drives up productivity and infrastructure overspend.

Paul

Unfortunately the way politics plays out is that Crisafulli is forced into being small target. Otherwise the ALP will turn anything into a massive scare campaign with their trade union funded war chest. They do that to an extent anyway, but remember how they created all past scare campaigns.

The reality is David Crusafulli would be unwise to commit to much until the full financial mess is revealed. I fear we are in more debt than has been admitted to. I think he doesn’t want to disappoint and I admire his integrity there. It was good to see both of them admit that capping rents is not possible as the Greens promise on that is ridiculous

Every day my confusion grows!

It took days for Miles to get to Tamborine Mountain after the tornado, and residents didn’t have power for weeks. And when he did turn up all he could do was flex for the cameras and drag a token branch. Epic fail.

Miles could have done better if he was concentrating instead of cutting in. He was distracted by trying – but failing – to land the hits and may have been more of a chance if he was nimble instead of going with the preprepared blows. It was closer than I thought it would be, but Crisafulli bettered him.

David

For me the debate offered nothing more than hollow plans and promises with plenty of dubious facts and figures. That aside, after almost ten years of Labor’s failures and inaction anything will be better, and according to every poll, change is coming and thank god for that.

Susan

Chalk and cheese debate in the end. Miles appeared to be shell-shocked and a fish out of water floundering. It’s not entirely his fault his previous boss Palaszczuk lay the foundations of his own and our states ruin and that should not be forgotten.

Wayne

It doesn’t matter what it costs really LNP would only have to fix one issue to be better than labour. As far as I am concerned anyone who votes labour back in doesn’t care about the future as they have had nine years to preform and what have they done NOTHING but overspend and fix any major issues
