Premier: It’s a parent’s right to send kids back to school

Why should only the children of essential workers be allowed by our zealous State Government to attend school? It should be a parent’s decision on where their son or daughter receives an education, not the Premier’s, writes Kylie Lang.

Education Minister 'undecided' despite PM's call for kids to return to school

WHY should only the children of essential workers be allowed by our zealous State Government to attend school?

It should be a parent’s decision on where their son or daughter receives an education, not the Premier’s.

Education Minister Grace Grace explains which children can go to school in Term 2 and how home schooling can work

One on the one hand, Prime Minister Scott Morrison is urging parents to send their children back to school – because it has been declared safe to do so – yet on the other Annastacia Palaszczuk and her Education Minister are glibly telling parents to suck it up and get on with homeschooling.

Ms Grace says a parent needs to spend only two to three hours a day supervising learning. I’d like to see her try.

Parents I know who’ve been thrust into the role of educator are spending much longer than that. They’re stressed to the eyeballs, and their businesses – or what’s left of them – are struggling as a result.

I’m with ScoMo when he says any adult with a job is an essential worker.

In my household that’s just me – and my working from home should not be confused with having loads of free time to fight with my kids over the lessons they don’t want their annoying parent to teach or supervise.

Like most people, I’m working harder than ever, and in a makeshift home office that is lacking.

I consider myself fortunate that my son is now at university, so the learning is all on him, but I feel for parents who are already pushing the proverbial uphill only to be told there is more to shovel.

If the Federal Government reckons it’s safe for schools to reopen, then every child should be permitted to attend.
