The state of Queensland’s multibillion-dollar construction pipeline - and the fear of further cost blowouts - has predictably been slammed by readers.
It was revealed in August 2023 that there could be further blowouts and lengthy delays due to a state government policy industry insiders claim was artificially driving up wages and slashing productivity.
Whistleblowers claimed multi-millions of taxpayer dollars were being wasted due to the government’s Best Practice Industry Conditions policy – which forces contractors and unions to negotiate agreements on state civil construction projects worth more than $100m – pointing the blame at Public Works and Procurement Minister Mick de Brenni.
Under the union-centric conditions – dubbed the “CFMEU tax” – the industry warns state-funded projects were being driven up as much as 30 per cent, with traffic controllers and labourers paid up to $200,000 on some sites.
That news sparked a flood of anger from readers.

$200k a year!! Serious! Who’d be a teacher or nurse when you can get paid that!!

If we had a Premier with the intestinal fortitude of Joh the CFMEU would not be controlling our state
We certainly wouldnt be paying traffic controllers 200k per year and tradies demanding 150-200 dollars per hour Now this government has driven up the cost of home construction with their energy efficient hysteria to the tune of 20-40k
The people who have signed contracts are in for a shock when they get the “extra” invoices. So much for affordable housing for those trying to live the Australian dream of owning a home
Timothy
No wonder Labor and Unions has turned Australia into a 3rd world country and Australian jobs and industries are going overseas, all due to costs.

High time a big broom gets going throughout this state.

This dreadful crippling mess won’t be resolved until we vote this Palaszczuk government OUT.
Graham
The quicker the government legislate to ban compulsory unionism the better.
Neil
And those highly paid traffic controllers are normally the Union delegates at the gate!
Ross
Simple solution. Sack this Government at the next election and break Qld free from its Union strangle hold.
Ken
de Brenni and Bailey just need to go...along with the rest of this hopeless “government”.
Austin
This is how socialism works. It’s a scam for the socialist elite and their benefactors who allow them to rule over the rest of us.
