Shots fired into Kellyville home as police probe link to torched car in ‘targeted’ attack

Police are hunting a group of men after a “targeted” shooting following a confrontation in front of a home in Sydney’s north west. A family of three were inside at the time it was sprayed with bullets.

A suburban home has been sprayed with bullets and a car set alight nearby in Sydney’s northwest early on Tuesday, in what police believe was a targeted but “reckless” attack.

A manhunt is underway for up to four offenders, with detectives probing possible links to other recent Sydney shootings.

Emergency services were called to Janamba Ave in Kellyville shortly before 3.10am following reports of gunfire.

Officers were told up to six shots were fired into a window of the home.

A man and woman, both in their 30s, and a two-year-old child were inside at the time but were not injured.

Detective Superintendent Naomi Moore said the family had heard noises outside before a confrontation at the front door.

“We’re led to believe that … there was a confrontation or a discussion, at least at the front door, before shots were fired,” she said.

“They could have been killed. Their actions are reckless. They have no regard for the community — and to be honest — they’ve got no regard for themselves.”

While Supt Moore stopped short of calling it a gang-related attack, she confirmed the shooting was targeted.

“We believe it is a targeted attack. I won’t go so far as to say it’s gang related, but we do believe that it was targeted,” she said.

Shortly after the shooting, emergency services were called to Gorman Ave, where a small white Toyota was found alight.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguished the blaze, but the vehicle was completely destroyed.

Police established crime scenes at both locations, and forensic officers spent Tuesday morning scouring the area for evidence.

Detectives, accompanied by sniffer dogs, were seen combing the footpath and front yard of the Kellyville home, with evidence markers in hand.

Police tape cordoned off the entire street frontage, while officers were spotted speaking with neighbours in an effort to gather CCTV footage or information about suspicious activity in the area.

“We’ve thrown a lot at it this morning,” Supt Moore said.

“There are detectives at a number of scenes in Kellyville and it’s going to be a prolonged investigation. Organised Crime are interested in this and are working closely with The Hills Police Area Command.”

Investigators believe the offenders torched the vehicle in Gorman Ave before fleeing through a nearby reserve on foot. CCTV footage from the area shows several people running, and police are now searching for a second vehicle.

“We believe there are between three and four offenders … and we encourage anyone in the vicinity of these streets to check dashcam or home security footage,” Supt Moore said.

She confirmed Strike Force Falcon has been brought in to assist and said the family may have only recently moved into the home.

While police are yet to confirm a direct connection, Supt Moore said they are examining possible links to a separate shooting nearby on June 25.

“It’s too early to say what those links are, but one would argue from proximity and the actions of the offenders that there could potentially be a link,” she said.

A northwest Sydney MP says gun violence is becoming disturbingly frequent in his community and is calling for urgent reform.

Kellyville state Liberal MP Ray Williams has urged the government to rethink its approach to crime.

“Toughen up our laws, and in particular our bail laws, increase our police resourcing. I mean Hills command, because our area is normally recognised as a very, very safe area. We’re always low in police numbers,” he told 2GB.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
