Shayne Wood: Police officer charged with domestic violence offences

A serving senior constable, attached to a specialist command, has appeared in court for the first time to face allegations of domestic violence.

A serving police officer has denied allegations of domestic violence when he appeared in court for the first time.

Shayne Brian Wood, 48, pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault in Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday.

Professional Standards Command officers launched an investigation in recent weeks into an alleged domestic violence incident involving Wood, a police officer attached to a specialist command, while off-duty.

Following inquiries, the senior constable was arrested on June 9 and taken to Sutherland police station where he was charged before he was granted conditional bail.

Wood’s employment status is under review, a police spokeswoman confirmed.

The court heard the Professional Standards Command was still investigating the allegations with potential further charges to be laid.

Wood, who was not legally represented, indicated the police statement of facts would be disputed and he would seek legal advice.

He is also subject to an apprehended domestic violence order which Wood said he would seek to amend at a further court appearance.

The case was set down for hearing on December 1 at Sutherland Local Court.
