Shocking footage has been shared online showing at least half a dozen rats roaming inside a favourite late-night Sydney diner.
The video posted to TikTok is shot from outside the Indian Home Diner on Oxford St in Paddington, before the user pans to inside the shop, zooming in on rats running around the back.
Some rats were seen standing idly while others were darting around, with one appearing to try and crawl up a white bucket in the store. An enormous rat also makes its way into the shot not long before the video ends.
It comes more than two years after the popular late-night outlet was saved from serving its classic Indian kebabs, with Woollahra Council reversing a decision to stop the shop from trading until 3am on weekends.
The original decision was based on noise concerns and the belief the late-night trading hours were “not in the public interest”. The owner would have faced a $6000 fine for every night the shop was open past midnight, before the backflip.
The business explained at the time that not being able to operate until 3am would “cripple” the restaurant.
The diner, which serves its classic naan rolls filled with butter chicken, has over the years become a go-to stop after a night out for boozed-up punters on Oxford St.
The TikTok video has been viewed by more than half a million people, attracting 15,000 likes and 1000 comments.
One commenter joked he “regularly” visited the diner, which does “a really nice butter rat and rice with naan bread”, while one replied: “I’m just thinking Ratatouille.”
However, another user, who claimed to have worked for a company that cleaned kitchens, replied to the video, saying Sydney was built on sewage tunnels and “99.9 per cent of restaurants have rodents”.
Indian Home Diner was contacted for comment.
The Department of Primary Industries, which oversees the NSW Food Authority, did not provide a comment on Sunday.
The video comes three months after rat-catchers told The Daily Telegraph the city’s rodent problem was “the worst it’s ever been”.
“October and March is when we usually see a bit of an increase because of breeding season,” pest controller Nathaly Haeren said in October. “But (in 2024) it’s been non-stop. We’ve seen them all year.”
