A manhunt is underway after a person was killed, and two others were injured, after they were struck by a car allegedly performing burnouts in the Hunter Valley overnight, with the suspected vehicle found burnt-out a short time later.
Just after midnight, emergency services were called to a fire trail off Haul Road in Stockrington, where they were told a modified Ford Fairmont sedan was performing a burnout, when it hit three people, before the driver fled the scene.
A 53-year-old man suffered critical head injuries from the incident and died a short time later.
Two women who are also believed to be struck by the sedan left the scene before emergency services arrived.
At around 2:40am, police found a burnt-out vehicle which they believe is the Ford Fairmont sedan on McFarlanes Rd in the nearby suburb of Chisholm.
Police have established crime scenes at both locations, with the burnt-out vehicle taken for forensic examination.
Detectives are hoping to speak to the driver of the Ford Fairmont or any witnesses of the incident, and are appealing for dashcam vision that can help with their investigation.
On Facebook, a member of the local community said dangerous road behaviour in that particular area was becoming more common and was getting “ridiculous”.
“Its very rare when I come over that you can’t smell rubber or see someone doing burnouts, and fresh marks almost every morning,” the local said.
The incident comes only months after an 18-year-old man crashed into several pedestrians, including an eight year old girl, while performing an alleged burnout in Abermain, which is only 20 minutes drive from Sunday morning’s scene.
