A young woman has appeared in court for the first time after being charged with serious drug supply offences.

Kelly Ryan, 22, fronted in Sutherland Local Court last week facing charges of two counts of drug supply and participating in a criminal group following her arrest in May.

Police allege Ryan was allegedly involved in a drug syndicate and supplied cocaine and MDMA between November and April.

Documents tendered to court said the criminal group ‘Nick’ allegedly operated in Sydney, with Ryan allegedly selling cocaine at Bondi Junction.

In court, Ryan’s lawyer asked for his client to be referred to the Magistrates Early Referral Into Treatment program which is a voluntary, pre-plea program for adults in the local court who have issues related to their alcohol and other drug use.

MERIT provides access to a wide range of alcohol and other drug treatment services for 12 weeks while court matters are adjourned.

Magistrate Philip Stewart refused the application noting the matter was too serious given Ryan’s charges related to supplying more than an indictable quantity, and she was therefore not suitable for the program.

The court heard Ryan had no criminal history.

Her lawyer indicated he would be making representations to police to have some of her charges dealt with on a form one, which if accepted, would be taken into account when sentencing for a main drug supply offence.

Ryan’s lawyer also sought to have his client’s bail address changed from Miranda to a home in Sylvania, as well as changing her reporting conditions.

She is now required to report three days a week.

The case was adjourned to June 28 at Waverley Local Court, given the offences allegedly occurred in the eastern suburbs area.
