A horse has been dramatically pulled from a South Coast farm septic tank in an intense multi-agency rescue, with emergency services calling a towing company to help get the mare to safety.

The unusual rescue operation unfolded about 9pm Tuesday at a Jeremadra farm, south of Mogo, when the mare fell through a septic tank in a paddock.

The female horse remained trapped in the waste tank, with only its head and neck visible for hours.

Worried owners reported the emergency to local SES and RFS branches, but an RFS spokesman said it was clear reinforcements were needed.

Croakers Towing Services arrived at the scene with an excavator and straps.

“Upon arrival, we were instructed to dig a ramp to assist the mare to walk out,” a Croakers spokesman said.

“With her position and the unknown location of her legs, a slow and steady approach was required.”

Under close supervision from a vet, RFS and SES personnel as well as towing workers secured straps around the horse’s chest to help coax her onto dry land.

“Due to her time in the pit and depth, she’d become quite weak and was unable to walk out herself,” the towing spokesman said.

With the straps and excavator’s help, the mare was successfully lifted to safety.

“Once out of real danger, she had a moment’s rest on the ramp, giving the vet a chance to check her over,” the spokesman said.

The vet treated minor scrapes and said the horse was expected to make a full recovery.

“This was a great example of locals helping locals,” the spokesman said.

“Definitely something out of our ordinary but an honour to be apart of.”
