A Central Coast man who turned to drug dealing to fund his habit has been sentenced in court after cops caught him with more than $7000 in cash and 66 grams of methamphetamine during a roadside stop.
Jamie Steven Keegan-McLennan, 25, of Wyongah, pleaded guilty in Wyong Local Court to supplying a prohibited drug and dealing with the proceeds of crime.
According to police facts, Keegan-McLennan was found with the quantity of methamphetamine on December 20 last year when he was stopped by police at Mayfield West.
He told officers he was from the Central Coast but could not explain why he was specifically in Newcastle.
Police noted his nervous demeanour and dishevelled appearance, forming the view he was a drug user.
A search of his vehicle uncovered four bags of methamphetamine, a scale, $750 in cash, and an envelope containing $5000 in five $1000 bundles. In total, police seized more than $7000 in cash.
Keegan-Mclennan’s lawyer told the court her client was committed to turning his life around.
“He comes before the court for offences which occurred over a short period,” she said.
“He became involved in drugs through friends. He is sorry and remorseful, and did it for financial gain. He’s taken responsibility and is trying to change his life.”
Magistrate Kirralee Perry said the objective seriousness of the offending was increased by the fact it was motivated by profit.
“There is no information as to how systematic you were in terms of your supply,” Ms Perry said.
“Drugs are a cancer in the community — they spread like wildfire. Once they spread, it leads to crime, mental health issues, domestic violence, social disruption, and ultimately, social collapse.
“You are now part of that collapse and that problem within the community. You did it for financial gain and to support your own addiction.”
Keegan-McLennan was convicted and sentenced to an 18-month intensive corrections order.
