A man accused of attempting to import 10kgs of meth hidden inside candles from Canada has been charged following a drug blitz by Organised Crime Squad detectives.

NSW Police – with assistance from the Canadian border services agency – began an investigation in June to crack down on the international trafficking of methamphetamine.

Mitchell James McIntosh was arrested at a home in Hoxton Park on Wednesday when he was charged with two counts of supplying a prohibited drug commercial quantity and possessing commercial quantity of border-controlled drug unlawful import.

During a search police uncovered the international package of candles containing heroin, MDMA and electronic devices.

The 28-year-old’s matter was heard before Liverpool Court on Thursday when he was refused bail.

Criminal Organisations Directorate director Jason Weinstein said co-operation between law enforcement agencies was “vital when tackling modern organised crime”.

“I want to acknowledge the Canadian authorities for their exceptional professionalism and assistance during this investigation,” he said.

“The NSW Police Force will continue to work with all international and domestic partners to arrest and charge those criminals who think they can penetrate our borders with the only intent to harm our communities.”

State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad commander Detective Superintendent Peter Faux said keeping the drugs off the street was the No.1 priority.

“Thanks to the co-operation of Canadian police we have not only been able to stop a significant number of illicit drugs from entering our communities, but also stop further drugs from entering this country,” he said.

Magistrate Iman Abdul-Karim adjourned the matter to Campbelltown Local Court on September 4.
