A car workshop and a number of vehicles were destroyed in a suspicious fire despite the best intentions of firefighters who battled for more than two hours in Sydney’s southwest.

More than 30 Fire and Rescue firefighters tackled a fire which had taken hold in the building on Carlingford St, Sefton, just before 3am.

A spokesman said firefighters successfully stopped the flames from spreading to an adjoining property, using ladder trucks to get above the fire, which had intensified due to several vehicles catching fire within the workshop.

They were also able to access the rear of the fire using specialist cutting equipment.

In order to further contain the after-effects of the fire, absorbent booms were brought in and placed over all drains at the workshop to prevent excess run off.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, with expert fire investigators working with NSW Police to determine the origin of the blaze.
