Commuters are facing major delays across the Blue Mountains after a car veered off a bridge and landed on its roof on railway tracks at Blaxland, shutting down the line in both directions.

Emergency services were called just after 6am on Wednesday after the vehicle crashed onto the tracks. Two occupants are believed to have escaped injury.

The incident has forced the suspension of all train services between Springwood and Penrith, with Sydney Trains warning the recovery operation and repairs are expected to take most of the day.

Matt Quinn from Sydney Trains said the task of removing the car and repairing the damage, including to overhead wiring, would be complex.

“Passengers should look for pre-announcements and check information screens before getting on trains,” Mr Quinn said.

“Blue Mountains passengers should delay travel if possible or consider using other transport.”

Replacement buses are being organised, but availability remains limited.

NSW TrainLink West advised commuters via social media that six replacement buses are on hand, urging passengers to avoid travel where possible.

“Trains are not running between Springwood and Emu Plains due to a vehicle on the tracks at Blaxland. Replacement buses are being organised, but none are available at this time,” the X post read.

It comes as passengers on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line are also facing delays of up to 30 minutes after urgent train repairs at Martin Place.

Further updates will be provided as crews work to clear the site and restore services.
