The number of jobs in the Northern Territory is trending higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Latest ABS date shows that in the fortnight to May 22 the total number of jobs was 6 per cent higher than in the fortnight to March 14 last year.

This is by far the strongest performance of any jurisdiction with the bulk of new jobs in roles largely funded by the public sector.

Other areas of jobs growth includes agriculture, mining and manufacturing.

The data also reveals females have experienced higher jobs and wages growth than men with wages up 8.5 per cent compared to 14 March last year. For the same period the change for males was 4.4 per cent.

The number of jobs filled in the Territory is greater than people employed because of people working multiple jobs.

This latest ABS data comes on the back of April data showing an NT unemployment rate of 3.8 per cent.

Chamber of Commerce NT chief executive officer Greg Ireland said the data “reflects the feeling around town.”

“People have been crying out for workers and anyone wanting to get a job can,” Mr Ireland said.

“More people are getting back into the workforce and we welcome that.”

Interestingly there has been jobs and wages growth among older workers (60+) up almost 12 per cent and very young workers (15-19) up close to 15 per cent, coinciding with tourism and hospitality staff shortages.

The staff shortage crisis in these sectors is also reflected in the latest SEEK employment report which shows job ad growth in May this year compared to the same time last year during Covid-19 was up a massive 122.7 per cent. May this year compared to April this shows this dropped dramatically to -0.1 per cent.

Payroll jobs data is for jobs, not people employed. It is also those jobs reported by firms using the single touch payroll interface with ATO, which is most but not all employers.

Data on people employed for May will be released on 17 June.
