Cops warn rev heads not to try to emulate their racing heroes ahead of weekend Supercars action

Police have warned Supercars fans not to try to emulate their racing heroes on public roads, with extra patrols hitting the streets this weekend.

Home crime prevention

POLICE have warned Supercars fans not to try to emulate their racing heroes on public roads, with extra patrols hitting the streets this weekend.

Superintendent John Ginnane said rev heads should not “try and mimic the behaviour of Supercars drivers” during the weekend’s action.

“If your name is not Peter Brock and it’s not Craig Lowndes, do not try and drive like Peter Brock or Craig Lowndes,” he said.

“A lot of drivers, particularly young drivers, massively over-estimate their own abilities behind the wheel of a motor car and it leads to very untidy, and quite often, tragic results.”

Supt Ginnane also warned drivers not to be tempted to get behind the wheel if they might be over the limit, saying “if you drink and drive this weekend, you are going to be caught”.

“The traffic police are at all major choke points in and around Hidden Valley that lead everywhere else into the greater Darwin area,” he said.

“They’ll be at the track, and there is absolutely no tolerance for this sort of behaviour this weekend.”

Trio of fishermen rescued from capsized boat

A JOINT effort from NT Police and the Australian Defence Force has rescued a trio of fishermen after their boat suddenly capsized.

At 2pm on Monday the Joint Coordination Centre received an EPIRB activation from a boat in the vicinity of Charles Point.

The vessel was carrying three men, aged 21, 61 and 62, who had been out fishing when their boar suddenly took on water and overturned in a matter of minutes.

A Royal Australian Navy Patrol Boat was the first to find the men and transported them to a Water Police vessel who helped them back to Darwin.

Acting Senior Sergeant Anthony Clarke said the successful response was thanks to

“While definitely shaken from the ordeal, luckily none of these fishos were injured after spending nearly an hour clinging to their overturned boat,” Mr Clarke said.

“The successful response to this incident can be attributed to excellent communication between all responding agencies.

“And also to the owner of the boat who had everything required at hand, including his mobile phone and EPIRB safely stowed in easy to reach waterproof grab bags.

“NT Water Police returned to the semi-submerged vessel, towed it into a sheltered bay and tied it off so it did not drift and become a navigation hazard to passing vessels.”

Police allege the man followed one woman to her vehicle where he assaulted her and continued doing so until the second woman intervened.

It is then alleged the man turned on the second woman, assaulting her as well before leaving the scene.

Detective Constable First Class Vanessa Heffernan said neither woman suffered life threatening injuries.

“Both women were taken to the Alice Springs Hospital for treatment following what can only be described as a violent unprovoked assault,” Heffernan said.

“It is unbelievable the women did not suffer more significant injuries.”

Using CCTV footage police were able to find the man, who was arrested and taken to the Alice Springs Watch House.

“The Dog Operations Unit deployed Patrol Dog Drax, who located two alleged offenders hiding in bushes on a nearby private property.”

Police arrested a 16-year-old and a 24-year-old who were still in possession of allegedly stolen property.
