NIGEL Harris, who tragically died on impact when he was struck a vehicle at the Finke Desert Race 2021, has been laid to rest.

He was 60 years old.

In a Facebook post, race organisers said it was “a very sad day for all associated with the Finke Desert Race”.

“The Finke committee pays its deepest respects to the Harris extended family and in particular Sheryl, Melina and Mark,” the post said.

“By a tragic set of circumstances you are all now part of the Finke family and Nigel will forever remain in our hearts.

“May he Rest In Peace.”

NT Police, NT WorkSafe, and Motorsport Australia are carrying out separate investigations following the incident on 14 June, which also left two others in hospital.

The crash occurred at 9.38am about 35km from the finish line in Alice Springs.

Mr Harris, who had recently retired, shared hundreds of the photos he took of competitors in action during a pre-run at the Finke track to Facebook.

Instead of asking for payment, Mr Harris wrote a post encouraging people who liked his photos at Finke to consider donating to the ‘The 10 Desert Challenge’.
