Desert glamping a fun new holiday option in the Territory

With the Territory re-opening to international and local tourists, there’s a brand new luxury holiday option in the middle of the desert. SEE THE PICTURES

Camping vs Glamping?

THE new owners of Kings Creek Station have added an extra accommodation option for holiday-makers looking to step away from the Territory’s tried-and-tested tourist routes.

Drovers Dream is a new million-dollar glamping-style accommodation choice consisting of 10 luxury eco-structure tents set on an escarpment overlooking George Gill Range.

The spectacular views complement the luxury interiors and the levels of visitor interest reflect the re-emergence of Australia’s road travel market after a two-year Covid lay-off.

This is just as well, because recent estimates indicate the Territory’s overseas visitor numbers aren’t expected to reach their pre-pandemic peak until 2025.

Former Woolworths senior executive Tony McFadzean is one of the driving forces behind Drovers Dream.

The new glamping site will be part of the Nullarbor Holdings consortium that owns a number of remote tourist spots including Nullarbor Roadhouse and Border Village Roadhouse in South Australia and Erldunda Desert Oaks Resort, Kings Creek and recently, Threeways Roadhouse in the Territory.

Nullarbor Holdings bought Erldunda in 2014 and finalised the purchase of Kings Creek Station from its iconic owner Ian Conway in March 2020.

The Threeways Roadhouse purchase will be finalised within days.

Both properties have had significant upgrades, with the Territory Government’s dollar-for-dollar Roadhouse to Recovery grants assisting with upgrades at both sites.

After acquiring the station and the associated campground and traveller facilities at Kings Creek, Nullarbor closed the centre for five months before re-opening in September.

But it wasn’t until later that year that local demand began to grow with work on Drovers Dream, about 10km from Kings Creek, beginning last year and wrapping up earlier this year.

“Drovers Dream is really the jewel in the crown for us and for holiday makers coming to Central Australia,” Mr McFadzean told NT Business Review.

“It was built by our own workcrews who have done a fantastic job fulfilling our vision of luxury accommodation in an outback setting.

“The message is we’re developing property with exciting accommodation options and we’re really proud of what we’ve built.”

Each Drovers Dream eco-tent has its own power and water, individual balcony and BBQ cooking area, campfire and spectacular views over the George Gill Range.

Buggy tours are an option for travellers and there is an abundance of wildlife and some of the Territory’s best views. There are countless walks including Kathleen Springs, Aboriginal tours, and chopper rides over the surrounding Watarrka region.

Wifi is currently being installed at all accommodation sites at Kings Creek including Drovers Dream.
