Greek restaurant broken into in Darwin

UPDATE: The manager of a popular Greek restaurant in Darwin says she’s being pushed to her breaking point after a group of youths broke in again overnight to steal booze.

CCTV footage captured a group of about 10 youths breaking in to the Kalidonis Taverna on Wood St at about 2.24am on Monday.

Manager Foula, who wanted her last name withheld due to safety concerns, said this was the second time thieves had targeted the restaurant in recent months.

“We were broken into by a group of youths on April 8, they used a rock to break in through the window which cost us $1107 to fix and they took off with beer and whisky,” she said.

“This time we were targeted by youths again, using a rock to smash in and get a case of Coronas. The damage bill will likely be even bigger this time.

“They probably would have taken more but the alarm went off and they ran up the street.”

Foula said the regular break ins, along with anti-social behaviour at Kalidonis Taverna had put a lot of pressure on the Wood St business.

“We’ve had problems with people camping in the outdoor dining area at night time and treating it like dump,” she said.

“We wake up to find people have pissed and defecated on the tiles and we have to hose it down — it’s disgusting.

“We’ve also had issues with anti social behaviour where people have walked up to customers at their tables and just taken wine bottles and run off.

“The crime situation is shameful. I’ve had enough. We’re on the phone to Larrakia Nationa and the police all the time but nothing seems to get better.”

EARLIER: TERRITORY police are investigating after a group of people broke into Kalidonis Taverna on Monday morning.

Acting Senior Sargeant Wayne O’Niell said in the early hours of Monday morning a man told police he saw 10 indigenous youths, who were approximately between the ages of 10 and 20, all wearing dark hoodies at the scene.

“They smashed a door and the alarm went off,” he said.

“Police are waiting to see from the owners if anything was stolen.”
