A $5.2 million redevelopment of Darwin Gardens Oval 2, which includes new lighting and change rooms, is on the table if there is a Coalition Government after the next federal election.
Shadow federal Education Minister Sarah Henderson said Country Liberal Party Candidate for Solomon, Lisa Bayliss, had secured a Coalition pledge of $5 million towards the $5.2 million redevelopment of Gardens Oval 2.
AFLNT has committed $200,000 to the project.
Ms Bayliss said the redevelopment would ensure the precinct could meet growing demand to grow grassroots sport, particularly for women’s and junior AFL.
“It will provide modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that support the needs of local players, families, and the wider community,” she said.
“The current facilities at Gardens Oval 2 do not meet AFL standards, with no change rooms, limited spectator amenities, no fencing, and a substandard playing surface.
“These much-needed upgrades will allow more people, especially women and girls, to take part in the game they love in a safe and modern environment.”
The redevelopment will deliver: Four new player change rooms; an umpire change room; Installation of 300 Lux lighting on Oval 2; Refurbishment of the playing surface, including new drainage and irrigation; Perimeter fencing to improve safety and usability; Increased capacity from 80 hours to about 130 hours per week (across the two ovals).
Federal Shadow Education Minister Sarah Henderson said the development recognised the NT had the highest per capita participation in AFL, with more than 40,000 people engaged in the sport.
“Gardens Oval has seen a 55 per cent increase in player participation since 2019,” Senator Henderson said.
“This investment will provide young players with a safe, modern, sporting facility that encourages participation, strengthens community spirit, and keeps people active.”
