New technology sees surgeon perform first-time procedure

It’s the first time the procedure has been performed in a private hospital in the Darling and Southern Downs.

Advanced technology has seen a new and less invasive form of treatment performed in the region for the first time.

St Vincent’s Private Hospital urologist Dr Devang Desari recently performed Rezum therapy on a Toowoomba patient.

Colin Kessler received the therapy for benign prostate enlargement last week in a first-time occurrence for the region.

“I am very grateful to Dr Desari,” Mr Kessler said.

“He is a very talented man.”

It’s the first time the procedure has been performed in a private hospital in the Darling and Southern Downs.

Rezum therapy involves using thermal energy from steam to target and shrink extra prostate tissue.

The procedure is less invasive for patients with health concerns and it does not involve cutting.

Serving as an alternative to long-term medication referrals, the treatment can also assist male patients with sexual function retention.

Dr Desai said introducing Rezum therapy into the list of urology services and procedures at St Vincent’s was exciting news.

“Symptoms of benign prostate enlargement can include frequent or urgent urination, weak or hesitant urine stream or inability to completely empty the bladder,” he said.

“Many men discard the symptoms thinking they are a normal part of getting older, but they can be treated by talking to your general practitioner.”

The Toowoomba surgeon has a special interest in minimally invasive urology procedures.
