COOLALINGA residents will see a reduction in rates under Litchfield council’s draft municipal plan for 2020/2021 as a result of the current economic climate.

Litchfield Council Mayor Maree Bredhauer said this budget follows the Rating Policy Review, which will see a reduction in rates for Coolalinga residents making them the same as those rural residential ratepayers pay.

“We understand COVID-19 has put pressure on households and we have acknowledged this in the budget,” she said.

“The rates on paper will increase by $60, but Council has agreed to subsidise the rate increase from its financial reserves.”

It means ratepayers will not pay more in rates in the next financial year than they did in the last financial year.

The budget includes a $6.2 million capital works budget while more than $1 million is allocated to the council’s seven recreation reserves.

Litchfield council has expanded the temporary hardship provision to ensure it captures all ratepayers adversely impacted by coronavirus.

Deputy mayor Christine Simpson said council had a duty to look after ratepayers in times of need.

“Council is making sure no ratepayer is paying more, eligible businesses receive a concession and our new financial hardship application process for all ratepayers is simple and quick,” she said.

Under the revised hardship policy, ratepayers can apply for interest write off, deferral of rates or have interest placed on hold.

The draft municipal plan and budget is now on display for public comment for 20 days until June 25.
