Mayor Kon Vatskalis promises to keep Darwin council COVID-19 rate freeze despite massive 2020/21 budget spend

A PROMISE to freeze rate rises has been upheld by Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis in the 2020/21 draft budget and municipal plan.
Mr Vatskalis said a further $7 million would also be allocated to aid in the coronavirus recovery.

“This is the first time ever City of Darwin has not increased rates – and following COVID-19 this is exactly the right time for them not to be increased,” he said.
“Our draft 2020/21 municipal plan and budget represents a significant investment in our local economy, providing a strong foundation for Darwin’s long-term future as we recover from COVID-19.”

With the arts industry in Darwin negatively impacted by coronavirus, council is also providing support with $1.6 million allocated to sponsorships, grants and operating subsidies for community events, festivals and not-for-profit organisations, and the allocation of $100,000 for public art development.
Council will continue to collaborate with the Northern Territory and federal governments, peak industry groups and key stakeholders to address and resolve challenges in the wake of coronavirus.
