THE Cavenagh St car park will permanently close this month to make way for Charles Darwin University’s new campus.

A City of Darwin spokeswoman said the car park would close on June 30, with the $14.6 million land settlement set to go ahead the same day.

Construction on the campus is anticipated to begin as early as July.

About 391 all day car parks will be lost to the new campus but the spokeswoman assured Territorians there were plenty of options for parking available.

“City of Darwin has a current surplus of around 450 all day off street car parks, so the users will be easily absorbed,” she said.

“There are a number of different options, for instance China Town and the new State Square underground car park which has secure amenities, to open air of street.

“All day permit holders (people who purchase long term parking in advance) will be offered the same arrangements in another City of Darwin car park. Two weeks notification will allow users to easily choose an alternative place to park.”

Council has earmarked the $14.6 million for infrastructure projects in its 2020-21 budget as part of the Darwin City Deal.

“These projects will be redevelopment of the Civic Centre Building to create a town hall and complement the Civic and State Square Masterplan,” she said.

A CDU spokeswoman said the land was transferred to the university but did not specify what funds would be used to pay the $14.6 million bill.

The City of Darwin spokeswoman said the only issue with the transaction a delay in finalising the development responsibilities of the City Deal.

“The parties to the Education and Civic Precinct (CDU, NTG and COD) have publicly stated that, due to the delays in satisfying each of the parties diligence requirements, COD will transfer the land earlier to allow CDU to fast tack the project,” she said.

CDU was contacted for comment.
