AN abundance of spectacular fishing and camping spots remain open at Cape York despite restricted access to some locations as the Far North shakes off the wet season.

That was the message from a Cooktown fishing guru who is gearing up for “one of the best times of the year” to pitch a tent and throw a line in across the vast Far North peninsula.

The Lure Shop’s Sam Midgley, 25, said beauty spots near Bloomfield and further north on the Peninsula Development Road were teeming with life and ready to welcome visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

“You don’t have to travel far to get away from the rat race which is one of the best things about living here, and this is one of the best times of the year,” she said. “It’s just so remote. You can drive an hour or so and there is no one around the fishing and camping is brilliant.”

Weary Bay, the coloured sands of Eddie’s Campground at Elim Beach and Archers Point were all a fisho’s dream with reef fish, coastal jack and the elusive barramundi on the menu.

“All these spots you camp on the beach and it’s just great fishing,” she said.

Shiptons Flat at Rossville and Starke near Hope Vale were other popular locations ready to be enjoyed.

The Bloomfield Track, which runs from Cape Tribulation to Wujal Wujal, is also open with a number of waterfall stops

The famous Lions Den campground can be found after the northern end of the track.

“That’s probably my favourite camping spot because there is a pub there,” Ms Midgley said. “Everything is just so green coming out of the wet season,” she said.

“Wherever you decide to camp, always look out for crocodiles.”
