MORE than 40 years ago, Terry Ball was invited along to an SES volunteer meeting by a friend.

Countless cyclones, searches and sandbags later, he is now one of the most senior members of the Cairns group.

Tomorrow is Wear Orange Wednesday, a chance for people to pay tribute to the SES.

The State Government is also launching a new pin, which 65-year-old Mr Ball was one of the first to be presented with across Queensland.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said last year SES volunteers donated 400,000 hours to assist those in need during events including cyclones Owen, Penny, Oma and Trevor, and major flooding in Townsville.
