EARLIER: Cyclone Trevor will send heavy rainfall as far-reaching as Cairns throughout the week, putting low-lying roads in the flood zone.
Far North district chief superintendent Brian Huxley said motorists who take unnecessary risks driving through flooded roads would be at risk of being charged.
“Every year, people get themselves in strife crossing flooded creeks or driving through roads where you can’t see what’s underneath the water,” he said.
“I would have thought that some traffic offence or penalty would be the least of your worries because you’re likely to lose your life or that of a loved one who might be with you.
“Drive to the conditions, don’t cross flooded creeks and think about what you’re doing – don’t be impatient just to get from point A to point B.”
Cairns can expect king tides today and tomorrow, peaking at 3.46m at 8.52am this morning, and 3.38m at 9.27am tomorrow morning.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jess Gardner said Cairns and the Far North could expect anywhere from 50-100mm of rain over the next few days, easing off to around 30mm by the weekend.
