GRACE Lillian Lee’s designs are well-loved across Cairns and the country, but now they’re about to be taken to the world stage in a big way.
The artist has woven a one-of-a-kind statement piece of jewellery for American singer Solange Knowles after being commissioned by Sony Music.
Ms Lee said it was a speedy job to get the piece finished in time for Knowles’s arrival in Sydney last week.
“It was all pretty recent, within the last two weeks,” Ms Lee said.
“Sony has been really good to me, they also asked me to make something for SZA not long ago.
“They like to gift Australian art to their artists.”
She said it was “huge” to create a work of art for the RnB singer.
“I’m so happy that I was the person asked to do it, it’s huge,” she said. “It’s exciting and it’s fun because it’s for Solange and she’s Beyonce’s sister.”
She said the project was under wraps until Knowles landed in Sydney.
“I couldn’t say anything until she got to Australia, so it was pretty crazy,” she said.
The woven necklace was created at Ms Lee’s studio in Cairns.
The piece was presented to Knowles during her time in Sydney at the weekend, where she performed at Sydney’s Vivid LIVE nightly.
Her four appearances at the Sydney Opera House are expected to be her only Australian performance for the rest of the year.
