Alleged attempted carjacking on M1

A MAN brandished pliers when he attempted to carjack two women on the M1 on the Gold Coast before successfully stealing a car from a third woman.

Adam John Freeth damaged one of the cars when he stabbed it with the pliers and left a boot print from where he kicked the door about 3pm on August 9 last year.

He and his juvenile accomplice fled to New South Wales and were picked up by police days later.

Freeth was sentenced to four years prison with immediate parole eligibility. He has been in pre-sentence custody since August last year.

Judge Katherine McGinness said: “There were three women you approached and seriously frightened by your behaviour.”

She also disqualified Freeth from holding a licence for three years.

Crown prosecutor Jessica Guy said police had attempted to intercept Freeth on the M1 about 2.30pm but he accelerated away.

When his car started to have problems near Burleigh, he stopped on the M1 and attempted to carjack two separate cars while brandishing pliers.

When the women refused to get out, he got back into his car and drove to Palm Beach where he attempted to carjack a third car.

“He raised the pliers as if to smash the driver’s side window and yelled at her to get out and that if she did she would be okay,” Ms Guy said.

The woman got out and Freeth got into the car and drove away.

Defence barrister Nick McGhee, instructed by 888 Criminal Law, said Freeth had been visiting Queensland from Western Australia.

He said Freeth had a drug problem and also suffered some mental health issues.
