JOCKEY Kerrin McEvoy won his second Melbourne Cup, as Almandin edged out Heartbreak City, in an epic Melbourne Cup duel this afternoon, but how much do you really know about the winners of this year’s Melbourne Cup?
THE OWNER: Lloyd Williams
● Horse owner Lloyd Williams has won five cups, in 1981 with Just A Dash, in 1985 with What A Nuisance, in 2007 with Efficient, in 2012 with Green Moon, and now (in 2016) with Almandin
● Lloyd Williams is also the founder of Crown Casino, Melbourne which was established in 1994 and later sold to the Packer family
● Lloyd and Packer became so close, that the name Lloyd has since been passed down to the heir of the Packer’s, with the son of Kerry Packer given the name Jackson Lloyd
THE JOCKEY: Kerrin McEvoy
● Kerrin McEvoy is the brother in law of last year’s winner Michelle Payne
● McEvoy, finished seventh at the Melbourne Cup last year riding Gai Waterhouse’s horse, Excess Knowledge
● In 2000, McEvoy took out first place in the Melbourne Cup with horse Brew
● McEvoy has three sons and has three other siblings who are also trained as jockeys
THE HORSE: Almandin
● Almandin is trained by Robert Hickmott
● Almandin has been plagued by injuries since he joined the Hickmott stable two years ago
● In 2014, Almandin defeated Protectionist to win a Group 2 race over 2200m at Baden Baden, which was the year he won the Melbourne Cup
