While the event sparked mass debate over the treatment of women in politics, the significant moment firmly placed the issue of sexism in the spotlight and on a global scale.
Although these national events did not stop Aussies from turning their sights to the US when Barack Obama was re-elected president for a second term, alongside Joe Biden who was vice-president at the time.
Tennis pros Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal made history when their nailbiting grand slam final lasted almost six hours, becoming the longest match in the Australian Open to date, with Djokovic ultimately claiming the win.

Gotye and Kimbra’s Somebody That I Used to Know topped the Billboard charts for the year, followed by Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe and Fun’s We Are Young, featuring Janelle Monae.
It was a successful year at the Box Office with The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises coming in at the top of the list, after each film grossed more than $1bn, followed by The Hunger Games earning nearly $700m.
