Sixteen hours after a man was allegedly left for dead inside his Millmerran home, his stepson fronted a Toowoomba court.

Jayden Wade Doyle has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, but the charge was likely to change depending on the condition of his stepdad following the alleged horrific samurai sword attack.

The 55-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after his hand was allegedly chopped off at the home west of Millmerran.

Acting duty lawyer Alysha Jacobsen represented Mr Doyle in court on Monday, April 3, and said it was unlikely that Mr Doyle would make a bail application.

Ms Jacobsen asked for the matter to be listed the following day, so she could take further instructions on any developing charges.

Magistrate Louise Shephard ordered a brief of evidence to be completed on or before May 8, and set the case down for a committal mention on Tuesday, April 4.

Police said early investigations indicated a domestic dispute occurred around 8pm on Sunday where the man sustained the significant injury at a Flamingo Rd address, about 80km west of Toowoomba.

The alleged victim has also received significant lacerations to his neck, back, and shoulder.

Mr Doyle allegedly fled the scene and was located a short time later at a service station on Gore Highway, Captains Mountain, where he is alleged to have stolen a knife and bottle of water.

Police also charged the young man with entering a premises to commit an indictable offence in relation to an incident at the service station.

He complied with the police and was taken into custody.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics rushed the man to the Millmerran Hospital where he was transferred to a rescue helicopter and flown to the Toowoomba Hospital.

He is now at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
