The city’s network of 106 security cameras nimbly followed a “coward” who police said knocked a teenager unconscious in a sickening attack in the CBD.

The 18-year-old male was walking west along Park St with a mate at 2.26am on Saturday when another man sprinted up and appeared to hit him from behind and fled the scene — he remained on the run from police on Tuesday night.

The victim, who was walking to a train station on his way home, fell rigid to the pavement losing teeth and suffering a serious concussion.

“It’s clear that he’s unconscious before he hits the ground, the injuries are clear, it’s an horrific assault by a coward,” Sydney City Commander, Superintendent Gavin Wood said.

“What we saw is nothing short of horrific, we have an innocent 18-year-old man who has been hit by a coward.

“The person that hit him … he ran a distance from behind him, hit him to the back of the head, it’s a cowardly act.”

He appealed for the man who was depicted in clear CCTV footage, to hand himself in and for anyone protecting his identity to reconsider.

“Have a look at the vision, let your conscience rule your mindset … our city doesn’t deserve this, nobody deserves this,” Supt Wood said.

The sickening hit was caught on a privately-owned camera outside a Park St hotel and seconds later the man was captured on a council-owned camera.

The City of Sydney’s central control room operators manipulated the camera in real time, following the man as he fled across a public square and down a set of stairs.

Three other council cameras then panned, tilted and zoomed to follow the man as he ran away past the Darling Park building on Sussex St.

Supt Wood said the attack should not turn people off a night out in the Sydney.

“My message is the complete opposite, that the city as we speak is heavily policed, we take great pride in our policing. We all know that the light rail is about to commence, the city is booming, it’s got a great feel to it,” he said.
