Macquarie Links man faces court for alleged role in car rebirthing syndicate

A man accused of being involved in an illegal Sydney-wide car rebirthing syndicate has faced court.

A man has fronted court for his alleged role in a sophisticated car rebirthing syndicate which police say involved more than 25 vehicles with a combined value greater than $2.5 million.

Steven Malcolm Boxsell, 57, appeared briefly before Registrar Alanna Kill at Campbelltown Local Court on Monday, charged with one count of knowingly facilitate organised car rebirthing activity.

Car rebirthing generally involves replacing parts on a stolen vehicle in an effort to re-sell the vehicle, often using other stolen car parts.

Police allege, between April 16 and April 23, the Macquarie Links man supplied a number of fake build and compliance labels for the car rebirthing operation.

Detectives raided a Kingsgrove business and Macquarie Links home on the morning of Thursday, November 7 – the day Mr Boxsell was arrested.

A computer, mobile phones, documents and prescription medication were allegedly seized from the two addresses.

Mr Boxsell did not enter a plea and the matter was adjourned to January 22 at Campbelltown Local Court. If found guilty, the charge carries a maximum penalty of 14 years jail.

The 57-year-old man was the sixth person charged following a year-long investigation by the Financial Crimes Squad’s Motor Unit.

The investigation, known as Strike Force Emelle, saw police raid homes in The Ponds, Hornsby, Yagoona, Ermington and Dundas and allegedly seize more than $330,000, four cars, four boats and a motorcycle on October 30.

Among those arrested as part of the investigation include a 64-year-old man charged with 49 offences, including 44 counts of dishonestly make unique identifier. He is expected to appear at Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday.

A 20-year-old woman, charged with five offences including two counts of stealing a motor vehicle, will appear before Parramatta Local Court tomorrow.

Investigations under Strike Force Emelle are continuing.
