A Western Downs man has found himself in Toowoomba Magistrates Court after being caught drink driving, then making the foolish decision to drive home from the police station while still drunk.
Jay Callum Mackenzie appeared in court on Monday and pleaded guilty to mid-range drink driving and driving while unlicensed.
The court was told on March 22 about 11.15am Mackenzie was intercepted by police on Chinchilla Rd, Tara for a random breath test.
Police reported that Mackenzie was slurring his words and when he was taken to the police station he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.149.
He was also found to be unlicensed at the time.
Police then reportedly gave Mackenzie his keys back and told him not to drive and to “sleep it off”.
Mackenzie was then seen driving away from the station.
Magistrate Mark Howden described it as “incredibly stupid behaviour”.
“To drink drive away from the police station after being told not to drive, is beggars belief,” he said.
Mackenzie’s lawyer told the court his client had been having a few drinks when he received a call that a friend’s car had broken down on the side of the road, at which point Mackenzie made the decision to drive, however the lawyer concede this did little to explain his client's decision to drink drive away from the police station.
For his offending Mackenzie was fined $1800 and received a two year, three month loss of licence.
