ICAC drops investigation into Victor Dominello’s office

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello’s office allegedly leaked a spreadsheet to the Liberal Party dirt unit which promptly sent it to a journalist. The document contained the private details of hundreds of NSW motorists, including former Labor leader Michael Daley.

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello has confirmed the Independent Commission Against Corruption has dropped its investigation into his office allegedly leaking private data to the media earlier this year.

In February Mr Dominello’s office was accused of leaking a spreadsheet to the Liberal Party dirt unit which promptly sent it to a journalist. The document contained the private details of hundreds of NSW motorists, including former Labor leader Michael Daley.

Mr Daley’s private details then appeared in a Sydney Morning Herald article on February 8, just weeks before the state election.

Mr Dominello told a budget estimates hearing this morning that NSW Police, Information and Privacy Commission and ICAC had all looked into the matter.

“On 4 June 2019 the NSW Police released a statement, and I quote, ‘inquiries conducted by Strike Force Holmlea have concluded and in the absence of other evidence, no further investigation is possible. No criminal charges have been laid’,” he said.

“In relation to the ICAC, I can confirm to this committee that I have received a letter dated 3 September 2019, from the Chief Commissioner of the ICAC, the Hon. Peter Hall, confirming that they will not be investigating the matter.”

“I will now table that letter for the benefit of the committee. Given that the three relevant authorities have looked into the matter and decided not to take further action, the matter has concluded,” Mr Dominello said.

He declined to apologise to Mr Daley or the 192 other people whose driving records were leaked.

“I am sympathetic to Mr Daley and understand that a breach of somebody’s data and privacy is something that obviously is not a good place to be, and that’s why the independent reviews by three agencies now have looked into it,” Mr Dominello said.
