Guzman y Gomez, Oporto: Big changes to Cairns opening plans

Lovers of two hugely popular fast-food chains will surely be disappointed at big changes to the outlets’ planned Cairns openings.

The long-anticipated Cairns opening of Guzman y Gomez has been delayed by a year, while plans for a new Oporto are no longer on the table, as hunger grows among fast food fans.

A spokesperson for the popular Mexican fast food chain Guzman y Gomez confirmed the chain would not be slinging its signature nachos, burritos and fries for quite some time.

“Guzman y Gomez Cairns is set to open in mid 2023,” the spokesperson said.

“Cairns has long been a region that GYG has looked to expand into and (we) have spent time looking for the best site.

“Earlville Shopping Town is a convenient and central location which is why we are confident that this will be a great location for our entry into the Cairns market.”

The site for the new restaurant at Earlville Shopping Town is bare, showing little progress beyond the demolition of the former building, where NAB and Westpac bank branches previously operated.

This will be the first time GYG has ventured into Cairns and the chain plans to offer both drive-through and dine-in options for customers.

Guzman y Gomez was originally slated to open in June this year.

Plans to establish an Oporto at a neighbouring site have also been scrapped for the time being.

“At this stage, The Earlville Shopping Town Oporto store is not in the pipeline,” chief executive Samantha Bragg said.

“We’re excited to continue expanding our presence right across the state of Queensland with various sites planned throughout (financial year 2023) and beyond.”

Oporto currently operates in Cairns Airport’s domestic terminal, but the Earlville store would have been its first FNQ venture outside of the airport.
