A Cairns woman received a nasty shock after taking a bite of her takeaway burger on Wednesday afternoon, realising the bun was spotted in mould.
Earlville woman Amber Lelliott, 25, said she ordered the food from Hungry Jack’s DFO drive through about 4pm – an easy meal on the way home from visiting her parents.
“I took a bite and then I saw one bit of mould and I flipped it over and realised the whole thing was just covered in those little spots,” Ms Lelliott said.
“It’s disgusting,” Ms Lelliott said.
Ms Lelliott is a stay-at-home mum for her two year old daughter Amira, and said she was thankful she refused the toddler’s demand for a bite of the burger.
“If someone was to actually get really sick from that it wouldn’t be good. You could end up in hospital and it could be very serious.”
She threw the burger away and skipped dinner.
“I didn’t really end up eating anything, because I was just a bit turned off by the burger.”
“It’s worrying, because it makes me think how many people didn’t check their burgers or their feed from them? And is that what they all look like?” Ms Lelliott said.
Ms Lelliott vowed never to eat at that Hungry Jack’s again, taking to social media to share pictures of the mouldy bun.
Her post was met with several commenters claiming they had also been served questionable food from the fast-food outlet.
Facebook user Amanda Wilesmith wrote: “I got a mouthful of curdled milk in my coffee a few years ago ... had the lid on so didn’t notice until it was in my mouth.”
Another commenter Taylor Jayde Napier wrote: “we had mayo from there and it had bubbles (throughout) it and (smelled) disgusting”.
Rachael Murray added she “ordered pancakes from there years ago” and they “had mould all through them”.
A spokesperson for Hungry Jack’s said they had been made aware of Ms Lelliott’s complaint about the mouldy bun.
“Food safety is of the highest priority for Hungry Jack’s, and we have in place stringent
procedures and policies to uphold these standards in our restaurants,” the spokesperson said.
“We have been made aware of the customer complaint and have been in touch with the
customer to discuss this matter.
“We have investigated the matter internally and checked all available stock and are
satisfied that it meets our high standards.”
Ms Lelliott also wrote an email to Cairns Regional Council alerting them to the matter.
